Black Dance is Beautiful

BDIB-FLIER

Black Dance Is Beautiful is a cultural event designed to show diversity in dance in Cincinnati, and toward that goal, present an array of regional black companies among its global offerings. While the festival celebrates black dancers and black choreographers, the genre itself, has in many ways transcended boundaries of race and culture, heavily influencing all areas of dance and amassing universal audience appeal.

BDIB on Film Festival will provide free public screenings of the film “Black Ballerina”, throughout the greater Cincinnati area, as well as a one day screening of five additional films focusing on the wide spectrum of African Americans in dance. In addition to the documentary movies, there will be a panel of dancers, directors, and filmmakers, who will engage in a question and answer period with the audience, after opening with a moderator on the state of Black dance in America today: the opportunities and challenges. One very brief live performance (3-5 minutes) will take place following the first half of the day’s films. This project is deeply committed to educating the Cincinnati community about the beauty and absence of black dancers from the mainstream arts conversation.

BDIB on Film will create an opportunity for students to explore black dance, from modern to ballet, and will experience firsthand the rhythms, dynamics, character and creative expression of a wide range variety of dance forms.
